Frequently asked questions

Where does the San Francisco South Asian Radical History Walking Tour take place?

The tour runs through San Francisco’s Mission District, a dense neighborhood brimming with history, murals, street life, and delicious food. The walk begins close to 16th Mission St. BART, and ends one BART stop away, near 24th St. Mission BART.

How much walking or standing is it?

The tour is about 1.2 miles of walking over the course of about 3 hours. It’s wheelchair and stroller-accessible, and mostly flat. However, unlike our Berkeley tour, there are very limited spaces to sit; you should expect to be standing for most of the tour.

How do I get there?

It’s very easy to get to the Mission via BART or MUNI, and we very strongly encourage taking transit or getting dropped off. (If you’re driving, there are limited street parking and garages within a 10 minute walk; keep in mind that the tour ends a ~25 min walk or 1 BART stop away from the start point.)

Is there a restroom break?

Yes, we have a designated restroom stop midway during the tour. (And if you’re desperate, you can step away from the group and go to a restaurant or cafe.)

Is the tour OK for children?

We’ve had kids of all ages on the tour, but it’s most interesting to those 13+. Children ages 0-9 are free if accompanied by an equal number of adults. Our stories touch on themes like racism and Islamophobia, and we’re happy to provide extra content warnings for parents/guardians on request.

Is the tour OK for large and diverse family groups?

We often have multi-generational families come on our tours. We’ve found that the stories we share can sometimes spark respectful conversations and reflections about moments of social change. Our stories are diverse enough that attendees will almost always find at least one story they connect with.

Is the tour appropriate for people with hearing impairments?

Because it’s an urban walking tour, there may be moments when there’s background noise and it may be more difficult to hear. We will use amplification whenever needed.

Is the tour OK for people with dogs?

We generally discourage people from bringing dogs.

Are there any safety issues?

The tour takes place in a bustling urban neighborhood. Over the course of the walk, you might encounter children playing at the park, diners at restaurant parklets, street evangelists, musicians, unhoused people sleeping, construction, etc. As in any city environment, please be aware of your surroundings and take standard city precautions. We obviously can’t be responsible for situations beyond our direct control.

Are there any considerations around COVID-19 or other respiratory diseases?

Because the tour is all outdoors, we don’t require masking or vaccinations. We request that you mask if you’re feeling under the weather. If you’re sick, please contact us ASAP, and we might be able to offer a rain check or refund.

Do you offer discounts for youth or low-income people?

Yes, we offer highly discounted tickets for youth or low-income people at checkout. Unfortunately, we can’t offer discounts after purchase.
